Lighting Designer & Technician: Sheron Luo

After learning about the nature of the piece, and watching the movement material, I spoke with the choreographer and dancers. Based on this, I derived the idea of using a sci-fi-inspired underground sex club aesthetic for the lighting design. This was intended to reinforce the narrative elements of shifting power dynamics, intimacy, and alienation in the piece. The lighting needed to help depict a seductive and unsettling environment, that immersed the audience in a heightened world of desire, control, and detachment.

Design Concept & Execution
The lighting played a crucial role in defining the space, with a strong call-back structure in the opening and finale:

  • Opening & Finale (Call-Back Structure) – A single white spotlight illuminated a naked body, standing isolated in the vast darkness. This stark image framed the entire performance, creating a cyclical structure—suggesting exposure, vulnerability, and repetition.

  • Intimate Encounters – Low side lighting and deep shadows, isolating figures in fleeting moments of connection.

  • Moments of Power & Conflict – Sharp, angular beams cutting through haze, making the space feel fractured and unstable.

  • Group Sequences – Low-positioned warm floor lights, emphasizing movement, entanglement, and shifting dynamics.

Haze was an essential element, softening edges and allowing light to shape the space fluidly.

Problem-Solving & Efficiency
With limited time, I pre-rendered cue sequences, allowing for fast programming. The tech process happened without actors/dancers. However, only minor adjustments were needed once they were present.

Outcome & Reflection
The lighting design was intended to take the audience into a hypnotic, shifting world, exploring the tension between the conflicting human drives for connection and solitude.

The directors and choreographers felt my sci-fi sex club concept became a defining element of the piece. The call-back in the single white spotlight seemed to successfully reinforced the cyclical nature of relationships and exposure explored in the performance.
