Virtual? was a dance film set in Beijing Baiwangshan Forest Park. The work was designed to showcase the region’s natural beauty while exploring themes of reality and illusion. The story follows two forest spirits who discover and cherish each other, only to reveal that the entire experience is the hallucination of a bionic human. This artificial being, having only ever known a sterile, man-made environment, dreams of the forest and envisions itself as a spirit of nature.

As the Art Director, I wanted to emphasize the contrast between the organic forest and the sterile artificial world. The film’s visual language juxtaposed the lush, untamed wilderness of Baiwangshan with the sharp, minimalistic aesthetic of synthetic reality. Costume design played a crucial role in this contrast: the forest spirits wore flowing, nature-inspired garments. In contrast, the bionic human was dressed in structured, translucent materials, symbolizing the precision and coldness of artificiality. This distinction was intended to reinforce the film’s core theme; questioning boundaries between memory, imagination, and existence.
