Two Men is an intense, movement-driven performance exploring themes of contrast and transformation. As the lighting designer and technician, I sought to play a key role in shaping a bold visual language for this piece.

The stage was covered in white salt, creating a textured surface that interacted with the lighting. The contrast between black and white became a central visual motif. I designed a high-contrast lighting scheme to emphasize the interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the choreography’s dynamic energy. A focused spotlight highlighted key emotional moments, isolating dancers in pools of light, while projections on a dark backdrop created an immersive depth to the space.

A major challenge was the bulky projection screen, which obstructed movement and compromised the desired visual effect. To solve this, I coordinated a shift to a lighter, more adaptable backdrop, allowing projections to blend seamlessly with the movement of danceers. This adjustment heightened the interplay between light and form, deepening the contrast between fluid motion and defined shadows.

By refining the lighting to work to harmonise with the set and performers, the design seemed to amplify the production’s visceral and poetic impact.
